Mitigating and Uncertain Future

Commitments to a Sustainable Future

We believe that working sustainably and responsibly is the only way to achieve long-term success with our biogas plant solutions.

WABIO aim to balance energy efficiency,  and emission reduction, while protecting the environment and the interests of farmers and communities. Our commitments and philosophy extend to our partners, stakeholders, customers, and the communities where our plants are built.

A Forklift loading organic feedstock to the input in our green biogas plant

WABIO captures the biogas naturally produced by the decomposition of organic matter, that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Typically, biogas is composed of 65 to 70% of methane (CH4), 30 to 50% of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other gases including sulfur and hydrogen sulfide (0.1%-1%).

The captured biogas is transformed into electricity, biomethane, bio-CNG or bio-LNG.

When used in F&B and pharmaceutical industries, these methane-sourced products release neutral CO₂ into the atmosphere. This usage replaces the use of fossil-based fuels or brings energy where there is none.

As such, biogas forms a strong part of the energy transition and waste management solutions during the 25+ year biogas plant lifecycle.

and the Effects of Climate Change

Digestate

The digestate, byproduct of the waste’s anaerobic digestion contains captured carbon. It can be enriched and used as organic fertilizer that is distributed to farmers and put back into the soils, which has a large ESG impact.

Toxic Emissions

In WABIO biogas plant solutions, the CO₂ produced in our plants is captured and the hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is cleaned, therefore avoiding the release of this extremely polluting gas into the atmosphere.

Reprocessing

WABIO plants reprocess and reuse any water coming from its waste and operations in a circular manner. Excess water is recycled before it goes back into the ecosystem.

Circular Process

WABIO plants reuse its bacteria in a circular manner, thereby minimizing manmade interventions and on-site travels for an autonomous bacterial processing.

Regulations, Standards & Frameworks

WABIO is committed to upholding the highest standards of sustainability and accountability through recognised certifications and frameworks. Our projects align with sustainability ratings and the United Nations SDGs (UN SDGs).

Europe

WABIO operates in accordance with the EU’s REDIII and European Climate Law (established under the European Green Deal and Fit for 55 Package), the EU Methane Regulation (MERR), and applicable national regulations targeting greenhouse gas emission reductions.

WABIO’s impact on reducing GHG emissions and curbing the effects of climate change.

National

In Germany, for example, WABIO complies with the  German Federal Climate Change Act (Bundes-Klimaschutzgesetz, last amended July 2024), which sets binding targets of a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and full climate neutrality by 2045, exceeding the EU’s own 55% reduction target.

VERRA

One of our projects is registered under VERRA, a globally recognised certification standard for carbon credits and sustainable project management.  This certifies our measurable contributions to reducing GHG emissions while supporting global climate goals.

UNGC

WABIO is a proud member of the UN Global compact (UNGC) which aligns the UN SDG’s to applicable business practices through 10 principles. Click here for more information on how we implement these principles.

Sustainability in a Circular Economy

WABIO’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is at the core of its biogas plant solutions, with a strong focus on measuring and tracking carbon emissions across all scopes.

In terms of reducing global warming, the greatest gains of WABIO biogas plants derive from use of biogas in a gas engine producing both heat and power (cogeneration). Use of ‘green gas’ in households or transport, as bio-LNG, and direct use in boilers lead to around a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Our carbon emissions are tightly monitored in each plant operation.

In addition, WABIO’s approach to managing organic waste supports cleaner environments, reducing pollution, thereby fostering healthier and more sustainable villages and communities.

Our plants practice circular water use, reprocessing any water derived from waste, ensuring that excess water is recycled before being returned to the ecosystem.

Our Own Emissions

Scope 1

[Carbon emissions produced as a direct result of activities at the sites, such as the use of vehicles and back-up solutions (e.g., natural gas) to ensure the network is fully operational at all times]: WABIO uses one forklift truck per 2.4MWel site to handle feedstock. That is the only emission of a running plant. WABIO uses its own green gas for electricity and heat supply.

Scope 2

[Carbon emissions from the consumption of electricity for the plant to produce low-carbon heat]: WABIO plants are self-sufficient, using no other electric power other than their own produced green power. Therefore, WABIO’s CO₂ emission is much reduced from fossil fuel-based energy sources.

Scope 3

Upstream: WABIO’s modus operandi is to contain its footprint, sourcing feedstock from an area of 20km.

Downstream: WABIO is connected to the grid for electricity production; the same applies when bio Compressed Natural Gas (bio-CNG) is produced.

Our Goals

WABIO aligns its goals with international climate commitments:

Emissions: CO₂

Avoid 20 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year by 2030

Agriculture

Support sustainable agriculture with nutrient-rich organic fertilizers

Scale

Scale the adoption of green biomethane to decarbonize transportation and industry

UNGC
